PICKENS, MS (WLBT) - Nearly six inches of snow blanketed counties north of the Jackson metro. MDOT crews were out early clearing ice and slush off interstate and county roads and bridges.
Several convoys of sanding trucks also made trips throughout the day, to keep the roads cleared.
In Holmes and Yazoo counties school was out for many young people.
In Durant, students at Holmes Community College spent the day having snowball fights and sliding down hills. The trays from the cafeteria doubled as snowboards for those brave enough to attempt the hill behind campus.
Temperatures remained near the freezing point throughout the day, but that didn't stop people from all ages, from enjoying this rare winter treat.
