JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Hundreds of Jackson Public School students traded their classroom chairs in for the dental seat. Today marks the American Dental Associations "National Give Kids A Smile" day.

Here in Jackson, more than 1,000 pre-k through fifth graders received free dental exams. The cleanings were done by students at the University of Mississippi's Medical Center School of Dentistry.

According to the CDC one out of four two through eleven year-olds have untreated cavities. So, the dental students hope that treating the little ones prevents serious oral problems in the future.

"Today's a really great opportunity for us to reach out to the community and help the local area kids a lot of them don't really have access to care all the time and educationally they may not know what's expected for oral health" says Ray Santa Cruz, a third year dental student.

This is the ninth year the dental school has participated in "Give Kids A Smile," day.
