JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - It's one of the most crowd pleasin' parades in Jackson: The Dixie National Rodeo Parade. The parade officially kicks off the Rodeo at the Mississippi Fairgrounds.

Families from across the state descended upon downtown Jackson Saturday morning to see the covered wagons, horses, ponies and donkeys.

It's quite a show as actors portraying civil war soldiers march by, and hot rods cruise through.

Children enjoy grabbing candy in the chilly morning sunshine.

"It's wonderful. This is our first experience, he's having a grand time," says Amy See, who attended the parade with her 5 year old son Chandler. "Love the cowboys, the horses, the community spirit."

"It's the first time I've ever been to one, first time they've been to one too. We thought it would be nice to bring 'em," says Sheila McLendon of Prentiss, who came to the parade with her husband and grandsons.

The First Cavalry Horse Detachment from Fort Hood, Texas made a special appearance at the rodeo parade. They were expected to perform Saturday night at the rodeo, which runs through February 20.

It's Agriculture Commissioner Lester Spell's last rodeo. He is not running for reelection. "God's blessed me and my family, we are so grateful for the many friends we've made, the wonderful people we've worked with too," he says.
