JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The Dixie National Rodeo takes a break from the roping and bull riding to honor Mississippi veterans.  Sunday afternoon's show at the Mississippi Coliseum was dedicated to all men and women who have served in the U.S. military.  50 veterans were chosen to attend as special guests.

Lt. Governor Phil Bryant and Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Lester Spell opened the event on horseback in the center ring.  Both talked about the service and sacrifice Mississippi veterans have given to the country.  Veterans attending the event were given a rousing ovation.

"One thing that made it real unique today was we had the First Calvary Unit from Fort Hood, Texas.  This is the mounted unit.  That comes and puts on demonstrations the way the calvary used to operate in the army shooting demonstrations, the wagons, the cannons, the whole deal," said Spell.
