JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Between the roping and riding, action at the Dixie National took a break to honor Mississippi veterans Sunday.

"We are celebrating all.  We would not have this great nation without you," announced Lt. Governor Phil Bryant.

Lt. Governor Bryant and Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Lester Spell opened the event on horseback in the center ring.  Both talked about the service and sacrifice Mississippi veterans have given to this country.  Spell is a vet himself, serving two years as a Captain in the Army.

"You know all of us who have served in the military, it was a great honor to serve this country. We respect this country, what it stands for and the flag," said Spell.

Although all servicemen and women were recognized, 50 veterans were given tickets to attend as special guests.  For their hard work and sacrifice, the veterans were given a rousing ovation.

"To have the vets here today and honor them, it was a real treat here at the Dixie National Rodeo," said Spell.
