JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Mississippi Supreme Court Justice James Graves became the first black judge from Mississippi to be appointed to the fifth circuit U.S. court of appeals.

However, in an afternoon press conference, the 57-year-old Clinton native said he never really thought about it in that light.

"The awesome-ness of the task is probably the weight that I feel more than anything else," said Dr. Judge James Graves.  "There's a self-imposed pressure to do a good job. To try to do the job well, so I think I feel; I feel the weight, the pressure of all that probably more than anything else."

Graves said he's humbled by the support he received during his confirmation process, and he is pleased that his parents are around to see this day.

Graves said he'll be based in Jackson and will soon make the transition to appeals court.
