Family members gathered near Elraine Boulevard Thursday morning were visibly distraught upon learning that 54-year-old Minnie Allen, a fixture in the area of Hollywood Avenue where she lived with her mother, was found dead Thursday just one block away.

Described by family as legally blind, with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, Allen went missing on Monday. Jackson Police opened a missing person case on her Wednesday.

"Her mom asked a postman who was delivering mail in the 3800 block of Hollywood Avenue to look out for her while he was delivering his mail. When he came on Coleman Avenue, walking to deliver his mail, he noticed the subject lying face down in the creek," says Jackson Police spokeswoman Colendula Green.

But friends say they had already combed the streets and searched the creek.

"Minnie just walked up, down Hollywood, go to the store and back," says Ronnie Spires. "We used to see her, I'm telling you she was there every day. Every day."

Although police say no signs of physical trauma were visible on her body, those who knew her fear she met foul play.

"If she was murdered, we gonna find out. I promise you that we gonna find out," Spires says.

Friends say Allen never carried a lot of cash, and they can't understand why anyone would want to hurt her.

Police consider it a "death pending" case.
