JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Family and friends of a father and young daughter who died in an apparent murder suicide are in mourning Thursday.
Stunned neighbors watched as ambulance crews removed the bodies of 28-year-old Elliot Ragsdale and his 12-year-old daughter, Lenore Ragsdale, from their home Wednesday night.
Police believe the father shot his daughter with a shotgun and then turned the weapon on himself. People gathered at the house at the intersection of Scot's Glen and Scanlon Drive in south Jackson to pay their respects.
Police say Elliot Ragsdale texted friends about taking his own life. They called AMR.
The message reportedly said, "We've had a good run. Sorry I have to do this." A suicide note was left behind.
12-year-old Lenore Ragsdale attended Peeples Middle School. School officials say counselors were on hand Thursday at Peeples and Power Elementary.
An internet search indicates the father was a 2000 graduate of the Mississippi School of Math and Science.
This statement was released Thursday by officials at JPS: "Jackson Public Schools is deeply saddened over the tragic loss of Lenore Ragsdale, a 7th grade student at Peeples Middle School. Our hearts go out to the friends and family of Lenore, and we ask the community to please keep the students and staff at Peeples Middle School in their daily thoughts and prayers."
