RANKIN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A grass fire tore through southeast Rankin County Thursday afternoon.  It burned dozens of acres and even threatened several homes.  Fire crews received the call around 11:30 Thursday morning from Newsome Road off Rose Hill Road.

Shell Road Fire Captain Donald Nash, who arrived first on the scene, said a resident was burning trash and the flames grew out of control.  The blaze started nearing mobile homes in the area.  That's when Nash called in 12 other agencies including Rankin Emergency Management and the Forestry Commission for help.

"When the Forestry Commission got on scene, course that's their protocol to cut a fire line to cut between what's burned and what hasn't been burned.  The way the wind has been blowing it jumped the fire line several times over where we were fighting it," said Captain Nash.

The fire was finally contained just before 5:00 p.m.  No structures were burned and no one was injured.  Fire officials estimated 60 to 70 acres were scorched.
