Edgar Ray Killen lawsuit may be dismissed

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A reputed Ku Klux Klansman claimed a federal agency used a mafia hitman to gather information that led to his 1964 conviction.

Edgar Ray Killen said the FBI hired a gangster called "the Grim Reaper" to intimidate witnesses during their 1964 investigation.

The lawsuit seeks millions and a declaration that Killen's rights were violated.

In 2005, Killen was convicted in the deaths of civil rights workers, Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney.

U.S. Magistrate, F. Keith Ball, has recommended the lawsuit filed in February of last year be dismissed.

The recommendation will now go to U.S. District Judge Daniel Jordan for the final say.
