JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - He is a noted Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, author of numerous books. He even served as a consultant for the Cosby Show on NBC.

Today, Dr. Alvin Poussaint shared his message of the importance of diversity in medical education and healthcare in hospitals at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He also talked to the psychiatry department about the differences of suicide rates among blacks and whites.

It's not Poussaint's first visit to Jackson. He lectured at UMC in 1965.

"Well, it's been enormous change. I was down here, everything was segregated, so to see this change and even to see people sitting together. The last time I came here in 1965 to give grand round, the entire audience was white, so major change,"

Poussaint took part in the Civil Rights Movement and has maintained that racism is at the core of mental health problems in the African American Community. He said African Americans should remain passionate in demands about healthcare needs.
