Flowood seminar emphasizes suicide prevention

Posted: Updated:

FLOWOOD, MS (WLBT) - Suicide is consistently ranked among the top three causes of death for people ages 15 to 24 in Mississippi.

Also, according to the facts presented in a seminar at the Flowood Library Saturday morning, senior adults are one of the fastest-growing, at-risk groups for suicide.

Those who attended the program learned the warning signs, and also learned there's a stigma attached to admitting depression or suicidal thoughts. Armed with the proper knowledge, friends and family members can break those barriers.

"Teens, they're not gonna seek help, so someone, a friend, needs to seek help for them, tell an adult. With the military, family members need to step around them," says Donna Brown, Community Affairs Coordinator with the Mississippi State Hospital.

If you've had serious thoughts about taking your own life, or you're worried about someone else, call the Department of Mental Health hotline at 1-877-210-8513.
