Conference to draw thousands on West Africa and the African American experience

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Scholars, artists, and community leaders explore West Africa's literary and musical legacy.

It is all part of a two day conference that kicked off Saturday at the Jackson Convention Complex. As many as a thousand people are expected to attend the historic meeting on Islamic Africa and the African American experience.

More than 40 leading local and national educators and artists will examine the evolution of slavery from the forced servitude of individuals to modern-day human trafficking.

"One of the important things we're trying have had influence to do is to show what were the civilization in America achievements that were so amazing in West Africa 6, 7, 800 years ago. Particularly around science, medicine, literature and music," said Loye Ashton, project co-director.

The conference continues Sunday at Tougaloo College. It is free to attend.
