New exhibit about Camp Shelby's origins soon to open

HATTIESBURG, MS (AP)- A new exhibit focusing on the founding of Camp Shelby will soon be officially open at the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum.

The "Origins of Camp Shelby" highlights, in particular, the efforts of Hattiesburg physician Dr. Walter Crawford, who was instrumental in convincing the Army to locate a training facility in Hattiesburg.

Camp Shelby first opened in jJly, 1918, and it trained thousands of soldiers for world war one.

"We spent a lot of time researching Dr. Crawford's life. We finally got a good picture of him as well, in uniform. Not only did he get Camp Shelby here, he served as the Chief sSrgeon at the base hospital and later, served in the Verdun Hospital in France." nearly 50-thousand people visited the armed forces museum at camp Shelby last year.
