JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Millions of dollars are being poured into Mississippi to enhance communications because rural areas suffer from internet literacy.

Enhancing internet access rural and under-served areas is considered critical.

Governor Haley Barbour says the interest can be a port to education, jobs healthcare and civic discusssions.

Mississippian is the lowest serve area in the country.

The Mississippi Broadband Connect Coalition wants to change this.

They met at UMC Tuesday.

Governor Barbour and Jim Barksdale, MBCC Chairman, kicked off a year long process Tuesday to get recommendations for improvements.

MBCC is devoted to identifying and increasing Mississippi's digital literacy rates.

The Mississippi Delta is the weakest spot when it comes to high speed internet service.
