Businessman receives Nolle Prosequi in child sex case

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Sixteen months after a local businessman was charged with sex crimes against minors, he received an order to Nolle Prosequi in the case.

The Rankin County District Attorney's Office says 52-year-old Bruce Patterson of Leland was charged with two counts of gratification of lust involving children in Feb. 2011.

Patterson was scheduled to go to trial Aug. 15, 2012, but received an order to Nolle Prosequi on June 15 of the same year. The document states that the reasoning for the order is because "the State believes that it is in the best interest of the child / victim."

The order of Nolle Prosequi is a withdrawal of the original claim, but in a criminal case is not a guarantee that the defendant will not be later re-indicted.

Patterson owns a flooring company called Floors Plus, Inc. on Highway 49 south in Florence. Bond was originally set at $40,000.
