JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Local members of an internationally recognized sorority launched a program in Jackson aimed to develop the next set of women leaders.
Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha's Beta Omega Delta and Gamma Rho Chapters kicked off the " Emerging Young Leaders" program at Blackburn Middle School.
Through the program, members of the sorority will work alongside twenty-four sixth through eighth grade girls and help them develop their leadership, academic and character skills. The program will consist of numerous projects throughout the year. Those projects will help the girls learn about various topics like peer pressure, public speaking and building healthy self-esteem.
Alpha Kappa Alpha member, Amber Thomas, says, "I want them empowered, I want them strengthened I want them to know that college is great and they can always continue their education as far as they want too and they can do anything."
The "Emerging Young Leaders," program is being implemented in cities across the country. The goal is to reach and mentor 10,000 middle school girls.
