Lewis vying for post of Hinds County Sheriff

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Long time Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin again has a challenger for that job.

Former Jackson Interim Police Chief Tyrone Lewis qualified for the Democratic primary Saturday after McMillin qualified Saturday morning.

In 2007 McMillin was also appointed Jackson Police Chief by Jackson Mayor Frank Melton. Lewis was then chosen to be deputy chief. At one point McMillin demoted Lewis to Sergeant after he learned that Lewis had let his son throw parties at the training academy.

In 2009 Mcmillin resigned as Chief and became full time sheriff again.

Lewis ran against McMillin in 2007 but was defeated.
