Deadlines near and county governments try to redraw districts

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS- Deadlines are approaching and county governments are busy trying to redraw districts.

There is also debate over whether prisoners should be included in the population count.

Census data shows that inmate counts will have a significant impact on who gets elected. Candidates for county-level positions in most counties face a March 1st deadline to qualify.

State lawmakers say Mississippi would risk losing federal funds by excluding the prison population from those calculations.

It is unclear whether most counties are following the state attorney general's instructions to exclude inmates in redistricting or the census' policy of including them.
