Three suspects caught in Byram bank robbery

BYRAM, MS (WLBT) - It didn't take long for local law enforcement to take three men into custody this morning, in connection with a bank robbery. Police had help in making the arrests, from citizens just wanting to keep their community safe.

The robbery happened around 10 Monday morning at the Byram branch of BancorpSouth on Terry road.

Within minutes of the heist they were in custody. The Hinds county sheriff's department identified the bank robbers as 33-Year-Old Daniel Awabdy of Byram, 24-Year-Old James Mitchell of Utica, and 21-Year-Old Jeremy Hartsuck of Jackson.

Sheriff McMillin says Awabdy was the holdup man.

"Went in the bank, displayed a weapon went to a teller he knew, requested all the tens. I don't know how experienced he is at bank robbery but that's what he asked for," said McMillin.

Across the street at an oil change garage, employees watched the robbers flee, and decided they'd better do something about it.

Eric Westbrook says, "We got behind him the lady at the bank she came out and we saw her hands going like that. We said we have to do what we have to do."

Officers cornered the fleeing van on the I-55 frontage road and took the three into custody without incident. Byram police, the hinds county sheriff's department, Jackson police and concerned citizens all credited with the collar.

"Anytime we can put handcuffs on somebody that's victimizing our folks in the city of Byram then that's a good day," says Byram Chief Luke Thompson.

Late Monday the Sheriff's department reported Mitchell was a regular customer at the bank, and the teller recognized him, aiding in his capture.
