JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The City of Jackson is prepping for a major clean-up effort over the next several months.

Mayor Harvey Johnson announced the start of the Great American cleanup.

The nationally recognized program encourages volunteers to get out and clean-up their neighborhoods, schools and various sites across communities.

On Saturday, the City of Jackson's clean team will start working on sprucing up the Virden Early Childhood Development Center as well as various entry ways into Jackson.

"I think it's extremely important as I indicated earlier that ones' pride in ones' community can be demonstrated through how one takes care of that community or takes care of that house or takes care of whatever you want to have ownership of," Mayor Johnson said.

For more information on how you can volunteer across the city, you can call the mayor's office at 601-960-2324.

The city also has a number of free dumpster's available for residents to borrow.

For more information on how to obtain a dumpster, contact the solid waste division at 601-960-0000.
