Former basketball star arrested on drug charge

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A former basketball star has been arrested in south Jackson after police confiscated five pounds of marijuana and over $27,000 in cash in a routine traffic stop.

Justin Reed, 28, is a former Jackson Provine High School basketball star who went on to Ole Miss and the Houston Rockets, was charged with possession of marijuana, over a kilo, with intent to distribute.

The man who ran with the drugs, from a car driven by Reed, was Mario Jointer, 27, who faces the same charge.

It was the second time Reed had been charged with possession of marijuana.

The previous charge, a misdemeanor was dismissed.

"(The officer) Observed a vehicle that was in violation of the seat belt law" said Jackson Police Deputy Chief Brent Winstead. "He conducted the traffic stop. The passenger got out and fled the scene and the passenger also had a large bag he was running with. The passenger was apprehended, and what was in the bag turned out to be marijuana, on his person."  

The stop that produced the confiscation was on McDowell Road near McFadden Road, in south Jackson.

It happened at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
