VICKSBURG, MS (WLBT) - A bus monitor has been taken to the hospital following a school bus wreck at the intersection of Dana Road and Highway 61 South.

The accident occurred shortly before 8 a.m., as the bus, traveling south on Highway 61 South, was in the process of negotiating the left turn onto Dana Road.

According to officers on the scene, the bus had a green light in the turning lane and had the right of way at the intersection. A northbound vehicle, identified by a Vicksburg Police Department officer as a Waste Management garbage truck, was also negotiating a turn onto Dana Road at the same time.

The driver of the bus took evasive action to avoid a collision with the garbage truck.

The driver of the bus could not say definitively whether the two vehicles made contact.  The driver of the Waste Management vehicle did not stop at the accident scene.

The investigation is ongoing and law enforcement officials are currently looking for the Waste Management vehicle.

According to Dr. Elizabeth Swinford, there were 57 children on the bus and none of them appear to be injured.

The children were transported to the school where they were going to be evaluated by the school nurse and other officials.  Any child who wants to go home will be allowed to do so.  Dr. Swinford said that counselors will be available to the children.
