HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - The former personnel director of a Mississippi company has been sentenced to six months house arrest for hiring hundreds of illegal immigrants who were captured in the nation's largest workplace immigration raid.

Jose Humberto Gonzalez was the only Howard Industries official charged in the 2008 raid at the company's electrical transformer plant in Laurel.

Gonzalez pleaded guilty to conspiracy in December 2009. He was sentenced Thursday.

The company pleaded guilty to conspiracy on Feb. 24 and was fined $2.5 million.

Immigration agents detained more than 600 illegal immigrants during the raid on Aug. 25, 2008. Most of them were deported, though a few were convicted on identity theft charges for using fraudulent documents and providing fake papers to other workers.
