Mississippi St upsets Auburn 49-47 in SEC tourney

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Diamber Johnson hit a free throw with 27 seconds left to clinch 11th-seeded Mississippi State's 49-47 upset of sixth-seeded Auburn on Thursday in the first round of the Southeastern Conference tournament.

Mississippi State (13-16) will face third-seeded Vanderbilt in Friday's quarterfinals.

The Tigers (15-15) led by as many as 11 points in the second half and were ahead 41-30 when Johnson hit a 3-pointer with 9:25 left to launch a 19-5 run for the Lady Bulldogs. Johnson scored 14 of her team-leading 16 points during the run after having no first-half baskets.

Mary Kathryn Govero fouled Auburn's Chantel Hilliard with 14 seconds left, and Hilliard hit one of two foul shots. Alli Smalley pulled in the offensive rebound, but both Hilliard and Smalley missed shots after a Tigers timeout.

Hilliard finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
