JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The Jackson City Council has voted unanimously Tuesday to allow some residents of northeast Jackson to gate their community.

The area is along Carolwood Drive, near the Colonial Country Club.

The gated area would be between Briarwood Drive and Fairway Street.

The gated community is on a street of very nice homes along Carolwood Drive.

Homeowners petitioned the city to close it off to through their neighborhood for safety reasons, although they would not say that on camera.

WLBT asked City Public Works Director Dan Gaillet who would be responsible for maintaining the gated off street.

"Basically the owners of the property will be responsible for the maintenance of the street," Gaillet said.

The city council also dealt with another issue that has homeowners concerned in northeast Jackson.

It is this new Dollar General store at the corner of County Line Road and Old Canton Road, across from Krystals.

New Jackson City Councilman Quentin Whitwell inherited the issue but explained the area had already been zoned C-2 which permits such construction and there was nothing he could do but try to make the Dollar General nicer.

"Another alternative was the signing, the signing will of course be better, lighting will be less intrusive to the neighborhood," Councilman Whitwell said. "As I said today and I will say again, basically this Dollar General will be a Two Dollar General store."

Residents on Carolwood Drive would not talk on camera, but several did off camera.

They said the street was being used as a cut through for speeding motorists coming from Adkins Boulevard to Old Canton Road and they feared for the safety of their children.
