LINCOLN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Strong rains overnight caused a dam to break, on a 10 acre lake, in Lincoln County.

About a 50-foot chunk of the dam is now missing, and the lake is virtually empty.

The dam is next to River Road Drive, 3 miles southeast of Brookhaven.

The dam had been built during World War II and belongs to the Stamps family.

It was a 10 acre lake that was virtually emptied into the woods and a creek.

About a 50 foot section of the dam just disappeared into the water.

5.5 inches of rain were measured at the Brookhaven Emergency Operations Center, overnight.

Sabrina Stamps McMillan, whose family owns the lake, was very sad about seeing it drained.

"It's a sad day it has been in the family so long, and like you say it will take a long time to build back up," Sabrina Stamps McMillan said. "And a lot of effort. If it can be done, it will be done. We know we will build it back, we will catch fish again."

It means several families will have a longer drive to Brookhaven, but they are not trapped by the road washout.

Lincoln Co. Sheriff Steve Rushing said this was about the worst damage his county suffered during the storms.

"We had several roads underwater last night," Sheriff Rushing said. "Four or five accidents, no injuries. A couple of houses water got right up to them, as far as the damage this is probably the worst."

So Lincoln County dodged the bullet when the severe weather moved across overnight.

Despite heavy rain the sheriff said no water got into houses.
