JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - If you're looking to clean out some space and help protect your identity head on over to the Home Depot in Jackson off of I-55 North. That's where the "Shred It" truck is parked for "Shred It Day."
Earlier Friday morning, people carried and rolled in bags and boxes of paper to be shredded. The public is invited to bring up to five large garbage bags or five boxes full of paper to be shredded for free.
Officials from the attorney general's office say it's important to always shred documents that contain personal information like your social security and bank account numbers. That's because identity thieves can use that information to steal your identity.
"It can be very very serious, you know from a few charges here that you're able to stop right away a massive financial devastation" says Meredith Aldridge from the Attorney General's Office. "Some folks unfortunately call our office, they have had thousands of dollars taken out of their account."
"Shred It Day" ended at 2:00 Friday afternoon.
