Family appeals for hit and run driver to surrender

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A 5-year-old girl remains in intensive care at UMMC in Jackson after being rundown by a hit and run driver. Her family is appealing for the driver to come forward.

Jackson police have no leads and are depending on anyone with information to help them solve the case. Jakiyah Johnson was crossing in the 400 block of Nimitz Street with her aunt at about 10 p.m. last Saturday night.

Officers say the child was hit by a gold or silver Nissan. The driver of the car left the scene without even putting on his brakes, according to the child's aunt.

She was holding the child's hand when a car sped around a corner.

The little girl was hit and knocked to the curb. Her aunt is begging for the driver to come forward.

"I'll make our family feel a lot better to know who did this. Come forward and whatever the Judge do to them they really need done. She didn't deserve this," said Deandrea McWhorter Thursday.

Johnson suffered a broken right leg, fractured skull and other serious injuries. Johnson remains in coma today in ICU.

Anyone with information is asked to call Jackson police or Crimestoppers at 601-355-8477.
