PEARL, MS (WLBT) - Forty-four-year-old Bob Mitchell, who likes to play his guitar, in Pearl, is the one who started a campaign to inform his neighbors that there was a convicted sex offender living in their neighborhood.

Mitchell got pictures of 34-year-old Chance Frederick Carpenter posted on trees up and down his street.

According to Rankin County Sheriff Ronnie Pennington, Carpenter had been convicted in 1999 for touching a child for lustful purposes.

He had given an address of 209 Areo Drive. There was nobody there, but a neighbor told us he had moved next door to 201 Areo Rrive. That resulted in Mitchell taking pictures of Carpenter down, at the request of Pearl Police.

State law requires convicted sex offenders to tell authorities where they are living. Carpenter is now in the Rankin County jail on a $5,000 bond. He will face a judge next Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Sheriff Ronnie Pennington of Rankin County had seen our story about Carpenter moving from 209 Areo Drive to 201. That move meant he was not in compliance with the law because he had not told authorities he was moving. That is why sheriff Pennington had him arrested for violating the sex offender act.
