JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The State Board for Community and Junior Colleges votes to uphold Virginia College's initial accreditation denial.
Friday, members of the board voted unanimously to accept the appeal panel's recommendation to deny Virginia College's practical nursing program.
The school was found to be non compliant during an accreditation site visit in October of last year. A practical nursing student must graduate from an accredited institution in order to be eligible to take the board licensure exams.
Earlier this year, two Jackson attorneys filed a $14 million dollar lawsuit against Virginia College on behalf of 14 nursing students.
Those attorneys claim the school defrauded the students out of money knowing their nursing program had not received initial accreditation.
Officials say now, staff members with the State Board for Community and Junior Colleges will meet with representatives of Virginia College to discuss a plan of corrective action.
