10 children in vehicle that crashed, infant killed

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - JPD Officer Colendula Green said the crash happened in the northbound lane of I-220 north of the Highway 80 exit.

Thirty-year-old Tanji Wells was behind the wheel of a 2001 gray Chevy Suburban with 10 children in the vehicle.

According to investigators, they were on their way to a church function.

When police arrived at the scene they found an 8-month-old girl lying in the northbound lane of traffic.

She was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Children in the vehicle ranged in age from less than a year old to 13.

Witnesses said Wells hit a wall, which caused the SUV to flip and land in the median.

Wells and the 10 other children were transported to UMC.

Police saida two-year-old has life threatening injuries.

The extent of the other injuries is not known at this time.
