JACKSON, MS (WLBT) – A youth center celebrated its grand opening in the Capital City Saturday.

The Yogi Youth Center underwent renovations at its location beside the Hindu Temple on Greenway Drive.

The facility was designed to be a multi-functional activities building for its growing population of young people.

It includes classrooms for boys and girls, a basketball and volley ball court, state of the art sports equipment and a large kitchen.

Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson was on hand to cut the ribbon during the ceremonies.

"From a youth activities standpoint we can have classes. We can have music classes. We can have dance classes. We can have so many different other things inside this one center, and it's just a tremendous opportunity for us," said Youth Activities Coordinator Purav Brahmvhatt.

The youth center will also be open to the public.

During Hurricane Katrina the center served as a shelter housing more than 30 New Orleans evacuees for more than a month.
