NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) - The city of Natchez' resort status means the state controls the hours bars and nightclubs can be open.
City planner Bob Nix had been asked by the board of aldermen to draft an ordinance to require all bars to close at 2 a.m.
Nix told board members Monday that the city cannot restrict bar hours. He says since the city is a resort area, the Mississippi Department of Revenue sets the hours of operation of the bars or over licensing.
Nix says the city could make a request to the state for a change with no certainty it would be approved.
Mayor Jake Middleton says the city has been concerned about violence at the bars.
