GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A man whose dog was shot six times by a Gulfport police officer -- and then had to be euthanized -- said he wishes the woman could have used less than lethal force.
The Sun Herald reports the officer, whose name has not been released, shot Sam Lovato's dog while responding to a report of a break-in at a neighbor's home on Monday.
Lovato said 1 of the shots paralyzed Melmo, an 11-year-old female Rottweiler-Doberman mix, and caused other injuries. The dog was taken to a veterinarian and was put to sleep.
A police department spokesman responded to Lovato's concerns Tuesday, calling it unfortunate.
Capt. Craig Peterson says the officer at first did not see that the dog was tied up in its owner's back yard.
