Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Spring is here and many people are starting to plant gardens and tackle landscaping projects, which sometime involves digging.

April is "Safe Digging Month" in Mississippi and across the nation.

Wednesday morning at the State Capitol, Mississippi 811 and representatives from several industries were on hand to explain how the Mississippi One-Call System works.

Anyone using mechanical equipment or explosives to excavate, or excavating deeper than 12 inches without the use of mechanical equipment, or the removing of a structure or mass of materials on or below the ground in the state of Mississippi must give advance notice to Mississippi One-Call.

"Our computer system will identify which of our 1,019 members have buried facilities at this particular area," said Sam Johnson, president of Mississippi 811. "We then will send, the system will send this information to those utility companies that are involved. They then have the responsibility to come and locate their facilities for this particular project."

Simply dial 811 or call 1-800-227-6477. The service is free of charge.
