PEARL, MS (WLBT) - In the latest developments, Pearl police have identified a pair of would be robbers that stormed into a Pearl business with guns blazing Tuesday afternoon.
We have learned the men were both illegal aliens who lived at The Crossings of Ridgewood Apartments on Ridgewood Road in Jackson as recently as February of this year. Their current addresses are not known.
Honduran, 33-year-old Alex Vivas was killed at the scene by the store manager. 26-year-old Arnoldo Villafuerta of Guatemala remains in very critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head and both arms. He underwent surgery Wednesday morning to remove part of his skull to relieve brain swelling and bleeding.
The men were dressed in wigs and women's clothing. The gunmen entered the Gold and Silver Extravaganza III on Highway 80 heavily armed. The manager was wearing a semi-automatic pistol. The manager opened fire on the would- be robbers as one pulled a 357 pistol from a large purse. That's when a shoot out happened inside the jewelry store.
Lt. Butch Townsend said, "They had 3 weapons and over 100 rounds of ammunition. They were loaded for bear. They were. They also had duct tape with them so they apparently planned to take whoever was on duty at the store in the back and tape them up."
Police say two weeks ago one of them tried attempted to rob the same store. The car they were driving was traced to a trailer park in Pearl. The tag on it had been switched out.
