BRANDON, (WLBT) - Several families in a Brandon neighborhood were evacuated after a gas leak this morning.

The leak occurred around 8:45am near the intersection of Sagewood and Terrapin Drives in the Crossgates neighborhood. City crews were working on the sewer system when they accidentally struck a gas line. The Brandon fire department evacuated homes and Entergy crews arrived to shut the gas off.

Brandon Assistant Fire Chief, Richard Fortune say, "we evacuated one side of the road based on the wind direction and the other side we just sheltered folks in place and waited for the gas company to arrive on scene and shut the gas down."

Families living in the area are safe to return home.
