Police say a son shoots his elderly father after being threatened with a shovel.

JPD Officer Colendula Green says the shooting happened in the 700 block of Beaverbrook Drive just after 8 p.m. Saturday night.

Officers found 81-year-old John Hampton lying in the yard suffering from a gunshot wound.

Investigators say the 52-year-old-son, whose name has not been released, was bringing his mother home from the hospital when the altercation occurred. Police say the shooting victim threatened to hit the son with a shovel.It was found at the scene.

The son was taken in for questioning and faces possible charges.

The victim was transported to UMC. His condition is not known at this time.
