Mistrial in former jailers' lawsuit

GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) - A mistrial has been declared in a federal lawsuit brought by three former DeSoto County jailers against the county and former Sheriff James Albert Riley.

The jury deadlocked Friday after deliberating at the federal courthouse in Greenville.

The lawsuit, which sought unspecified damages, was filed by Tammy Williams of Hernando, Earl Russell of Coldwater and Cheryl Hambrick of Southaven. The three also want their jobs back.

The three filed the suit in 2005, They contend they were fired after reporting an alleged beating of an inmate at the county jail in 2004.

The sheriff's department contended it had policies in place against abusing inmates and that the police report alleging the beating was not related to the plaintiffs' dismissals.
