LORMAN, Miss. (AP) - Provine High School coach Luther Riley has been hired as head basketball coach at Alcorn State, school president Christopher Brown announced Monday.
Riley was among three finalists interviewed over the weekend.
In 12 seasons at Provine, Riley has won four state championships. His 2008 squad won the MHSAA Grand Slam Championship. Riley's teams have won 20-plus games at least nine years.
Riley replaces Larry Smith, who went 12-78 in three years at Alcorn and was removed as head coach earlier this month. Smith, who has one year remaining on a contract that pays him $125,000 a year, was reassigned as the director of athletic development.
Riley was a graduate assistant at Alcorn under legendary coach Dave Whitney.
