JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Negotiators within the state legislature finished writing a state budget late Wednesday night.

For most of the day Wednesday, House and Senate negotiators still had significant differences about how much to spend on education and mental health. They were also in disagreement over how much money to leave in the state's financial reserves.

But late Wednesday night, lawmakers reached a deal at the State Capitol.

"We have a budget. Uh, we still got it get passed by the House and Senate and I think we will be able to do that without too much debate. It's a budget that nobody is gonna be overly happy with but I think it's a fair budget and certainly it's the best we could do considering the economic circumstances in the state," said Democratic Representative Cecil Brown.

Lawmakers were facing a deadline for the regular session which is set to end this Saturday.

The budget is expected to be about five point five billion dollars for the fiscal year that begins July first.
