JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A man wielding a knife at a convenience store is fatally shot by an officer.  It happened around 6:45 p.m. Thursday at the Jasco convenience store at the Woodrow Wilson Avenue and Martin Luther King Junior Drive intersection.

According to Jackson Police, the man had a knife and was threatening the store owner.  An officer responded.  Assistant Chief Lee Vance said he directed the man twice to drop the knife. When the man turned as if to attack the store owner, Vance said the officer fired two shots killing the suspect.

"This appears to be a necessary shooting.  We had a suspect wielding a deadly weapon and tried to attack a store owner.  It appears the officer could do the only thing he could do to protect himself and the store owner's life," said Assistant Chief Vance.

"Why not shoot him in his hand?  Why not shoot him in his arm?  Why kill him?  That's wrong.  I feel like that's wrong.  Why not taze him?  They taze everybody else," said witness Ashley Bufford.

The veteran police officer has been put on administrative leave pending the outcome of a criminal and an internal investigation.  This is standard procedure.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
