Girl dies in school bus crash; 30 injured

A 10 year old girl was killed Friday morning when an 18-wheeler hit a school bus in Bolivar County. The wreck happened at the intersection of highway 61 and highway 450 about 7:20 AM.

Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Jon Kalahar says there were 29 passengers on the bus.

Hospital officials say all onboard were injured, some seriously, with at least three people being flown to university medical center by helicopter.

Fog may have been a factor in the crash. It appears that the bus had stopped at a stop sign at the intersection and was turning on to highway 61 when it pulled in front of the semi-truck.

Both vehicles flipped onto their sides after impact.

"As the bus attempted to cross the intersection, the bus was struck on the right rear side" said MHP Sergeant Ben Williams. "The 18-wheeler was traveling north on 61 and the bus was traveling east on 450."

The truck driver told investigators he saw the bus and hit the brakes but could not stop in time.
