Father accused of shooting daughter over horse

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Hinds County man was arrested Friday, accused of shooting his daughter after arguing over a horse.  It happened after 5:00 p.m. on Rosemary Road just east of Terry.

Fifty-two-year-old Melvin Chandler was arguing with 26-year-old Cassandra Chandler on family property.

Lt. Jeffery Scott of the Hinds County Sheriff's Department said the father opened fire, shooting his daughter in the stomach.  She was airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson to undergo emergency surgery.  Scott said the preliminary investigation reveals the shooting stemmed from a disagreement about a horse.

"There is a history. Our deputies have had to respond to this residence several times in the past.  But again, nothing that led to this apparent boiling point," said Lt. Scott.

Melvin Chandler was charged with aggravated assault.
