
Effective immediately roadside animal sales are prohibited in the capital city.
The Jackson City Council unanimously approved the ordinance Tuesday banning the sale of puppies and other animals on the side of the road.
Ward One Councilman Quentin Whitwell, who called the practice animal cruelty, introduced the ordinance.
Offenders face a misdemeanor punishable by fines.
Exceptions include any city animal shelter or non-profit organization.
Some city leaders said the sales contribute to unhealthy animals and breeding practices, overpopulation and animal abandonment .
