A body has been discovered in the Mississippi river near Vicksburg. Sheriff Martin Pace says his department received a call from Ergon Marine after seven Monday night.
Workers on a boat, coming in for service, spotted the body floating near the bank of the river about 4 miles upstream from Vicksburg.
Sheriff Pace said, "No reason to believe that the death occurred at that location. We have every reason to believe that the body has been adrift in the river from jurisdictions north of us, so we are, as we speak, communicating with the U.S. Coast Guard as well as multiple jurisdictions upstream from Vicksburg trying to identify who this person is."
Pace says the body is so badly decomposed that it is difficult to know the sex or race of the person, but he says the type clothing on the body suggests it is a male. An autopsy is being performed.
