Governor Haley Barbour vetoed a bill designed to force compliance with Mississippi's mandatory insurance laws.
The bill would have allowed the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, Department of
Revenue and the Insurance Department to work on a new program that would use computer technology to verify liability
Uninsured drivers could then face penalties.
Governor Haley Barbour said the system would cost too much and also add more duties to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The House of Representatives let Governor Barbour's veto stand.
