Opening Day for M-Braves at Trustmark Park

PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

With the sun shining and temperatures reaching near 80 degrees, crowds turned out in droves to see the Mississippi Braves 7th season opener Thursday.  For first timers the experience was magical.

"We just heard a lot of good things about the park," said Mandye Flowers of Brandon. "The kids are finally old enough this year to come and enjoy the ball game and Aidan is playing baseball this year so he's excited to see a real ball game."

The big day also means big business for Jackson Metro area stores and restaurants.

"Anything we're doing out here is certainly helping the economy quite a bit, but we also bring in a lot of people from out of town. There are a lot of Braves fans from the south east," said Mississippi Braves General Manager Steve DeSalvo.  He was expecting more than 5,000 fans for the first pitch.

"We've got some celebrity appearances, mascots, people like Jerious Norwood of the Atlanta Falcons," said DeSalvo.

For all the famished fans the new season debuted two new concession stands, Chick-fil-A and Pizza Shack.

"We have cheese, pepperoni, carnivore, supreme, large and small," said Pizza Shack spokesperson Thomas O'Brien.

The exposure at Trustmark Park is expected to give this Jackson favorite restaurant a home run.  "There's a lot of people that haven't had it yet, so this is a great opportunity to get these people to try the Shack during the Braves and enjoy the pizza," said O'Brien.

The new additions to season seven will continue to keep the crowds coming back.

Ticket prices start at $5. For more information go to
