Congress reaches agreement on budget: Shut down averted

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Perilously close to a midnight deadline, the White House and congressional leaders have reached agreement to cut billions of dollars in spending to avoid the first government shutdown in 15 years.

House Speaker John Boehner says there's been an agreement to cut spending and keep the government operating. He said the House will vote on a bridge resolution Friday night and finalize an agreement next week.
